VOCABULARY! It is so important for your child to explore vocabulary. Many of the students are attempting to read chapter books. While it is exciting to see their love of reading, it can be very difficult for them simply because of the vocabulary. The books most beginning readers work with include basic sight words and 1st grade level language. Chapter books, on the other hand, include vocabulary that is much higher. Please work with your child to understand the language he/she is reading and how to determine the meaning of difficult words.
If your child is buried in a book, stop them and have them read out loud to you and make sure they understand what they are reading through questioning and discussing the book. This is great time together and fun to listen to their thinking.

Reading
Children should be reading 10-20 minutes a night for a total of 100 minutes per week. Please record this information on the weekly reading log, including the name of 1 book read each night. Return your log to school each Friday, or Thursday if it is a short week. New homework logs will be sent home on Fridays so you can have the weekend to begin your reading.
